Getting to Know RAM Sophomore, Chelsea Hill!

Sophomore Midfielder, Chelsea Hill

RICHMOND, Va. – The VCU field hockey team has won five straight and are accomplishing things that the program has not seen in nearly 20 years.

Sophomore midfielder Chelsea Hill is a big reason why the Rams are 12-4 overall and have their eyes on a spot in the CAA Tournament. After the team’s recent trip to North Carolina, VCU Athletics Student Assistant Andrew Phillips caught up with her in order to get to know the Virginia Beach, Va. native a little better.

AP: Why did you decide to come to VCU?
CH: I decided to come to VCU because the coaches and I wanted to be a part of an upcoming program. Also there is so many majors at this school.

AP: Who influenced you most to play field hockey?
CH: My field hockey high school coach would come and watch my soccer games in middle school and told me to try out for the hockey team, that it was very similar to soccer.

AP: Funniest moment that happened to you or a teammate on the field?
CH: In the spring we play Olympics, for fun with our team and alumni. We were playing softball andMegan Rea was pitching, being cocky, and got nailed right back by the ball. It was great.

AP: Sport you would play if you didn’t play field hockey?
CH: I would most likely be playing soccer in college, I played travel soccer my whole life.

AP: Favorite thing to on team road trips?
CH: I would have to say team dinners because we eat at really good resturants and shopping..duh!!!!

AP: Favorite thing about playing for VCU?
CH: That I feel like I am a part of a family, I have a great team and coaches.

AP: One thing you don’t leave home without?
CH: Cell phone…I am a big texter!!

Whitt Receives Rookie of the Week Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Rachel Whitt (Fredericksburg, Va.) provided all the scoring Virginia Commonwealth University would need in a victory Sunday, and now she’s reaping the benefits.

Whitt was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Rookie of the Week on Monday, one day after she converted a feed from sophomore Kelsey Scherrer(Chesapeake, Va.) in the sixth minute of VCU’s 3-0 win over Appalachian State Sunday in Boone, N.C.

In 11 matches this season, Whitt has scored three goals and assisted on another. This is her first CAA weekly honor.

Whitt and the Rams return to action on Friday, Oct. 22 when they head to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion in CAA action at 5 p.m.

RAMS Win on the Road, Beat Davidson, App State

Your VCU field hockey squad returned back to Richmond on Sunday night after a two-win weekend in North Carolina. On Saturday, the RAMS pulled off a 3-2 win over the Wildcats of Davidson College, while on Sunday, the RAMS topped Appalachian State 3-0. See below for game stories…

RAMS Beat Longwood 4-0, Hit the Road for a Pair of Away Games

Wednesday night, the VCU field hockey squad beat the Lancers of Longwood University 4-0. After three losses to the Lancers in the past three years, four different players scored goals for the RAMS. Freshman Kayla Mueller scored the first goal of her collegiate career and earned RAM of the Game acknowledgement.

After a four-game home stand at Cary Street Field, the RAMS hit the road this weekend, taking on the Wildcats of Davidson College at 12:00 Noon on Saturday and later matching up against Appalachian State University in Boone, NC on Sunday at 1:oo PM.

RICHMOND, Va. – It looks like the Virginia Commonwealth University Field Hockey team is getting the hang of overtime.

Virginia Commonwealth University won its third overtime match in a month when sophomore Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) scored 6:54 into the extra period to lift the Rams to a 4-3 victory over James Madison Friday night a Cary Street Field.

VCU has won nine of 11 matches to improve to 9-4 overall, including 4-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Earlier this season the Rams snapped a nine-match overtime losing streak. Now, VCU has won three in a row in extra time. James Madison slips to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the CAA.

The victory also moves the Black and Gold half a game ahead of Old Dominion for second place in the CAA standings. ODU lost to Drexel Friday night to slide to 3-1 in league play. VCU and ODU meet on Oct. 22 in Norfolk, Va.

With the score tied a 3-3, Scherrer ran onto and deflected a hard through ball from senior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) up and over JMU keeper Stephanie Tarafas for the victory. The goal set off an electric celebration by the Rams, who had not defeated James Madison since 2004.

VCU surpassed its win total from last season with Friday’s victory and has now won four CAA matches for the first time since 2003.

Scherrer finished with two goals and an assist on the evening. The 2009 All-CAA Second Team pick scored just 1:41 into the contest when she intercepted a loose ball deep in the Dukes’ zone and chipped it into the cage. Scherrer has a team-high nine goals and 22 points this season.

Marle and Flore van Dessel each scored a goal off a penalty corner in the first half as the Rams stormed out to a 3-1 advantage.

James Madison countered in the second half with goals by Auburn Weisensale and Amy Daniel in the 45th and 66th minutes, respectively, to send the game to overtime.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Jablonski (Charlottesville, Va.) recorded nine saves between the pipes for the Rams, including a critical rejection during a penalty corner early in overtime.

VCU returns to Cary Street Field on Wednesday, Oct. 13, when it steps out of conference to host Longwood at 6 p.m.

RAMS Split Home Weekend, Beat Hofstra 5-2

The second half proved to be much similar to VCU’s match against Drexel Friday night, this time the RAMS were able to find the back of the goal cage. Down 2-1 to conference foe Hofstra at halftime on Sunday afternoon, the RAMS came back to score four goals in the second half. Goals from four different RAMS (Marle van Dessel, Rachel Whitt, Kelsey Scherrer & Emilie Soares) on Sunday in the second half, helped take the wind out of the Pride’s sails at Cary Street Field. Early Goals Lead to Rams 3-1 Loss to #18 Drexel

Friday night brought along a late start for the RAM field hockey squad as they allowed three first half goals from #18 Drexel. Out of the blocks, late, VCU picked up it’s pace and outshot the dragons 11-0 in the second half. Senior co-captain, Marle van Dessel scored in the 62nd minute off of a penalty corner to make the score 3-1. After the goal from van Dessel, VCU continued to put incredible pressure on Drexel, but could not find the back of the goal cage. RAMS Back Home, 2-0 in the CAA

Hi RAM Fans,

Sorry for the delay… it’s been quite the weekend on the road. After a hard fought weekend, the RAMS are now 2-0 in the CAA for the first time ever. See below for the press releases on both Friday’s and Sunday’s games. The RAMS are home next weekend with two key conference matches playing #16 Drexel on Friday under the lights at Cary Street Field, game time set for 6PM. On Sunday, the RAMS will host the Pride of Hofstra at home at 12 PM.
