Rams are Grounded

VCU’s games orginally scheduled for this weekend against Northeastern and Princeton have been postponed due to health reasons.

The fate of the Rams remaining season will be decided after the weekend, after make up dates can be determined.

Rams Fall to Tribe, 3-2

Richmond, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University field hockey team fell to William and Mary Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field, 3-2.

The Tribe (6-11, 2-5 CAA) scored two goals within less than three minutes of each other late in the second half to ultimately take the win. 

“We had it in us, and we could have done it,” said VCU Head Coach Kelly McQuade, “It’s those couple of breakdowns, that are mostly mental are continuing to hurt us.”

The Rams got on the board first, at the 30:31 mark, when Hannah Lyerly (Williamsburg, Va.) received the ball from Chelsea Hill (Virginia Beach, Va.) behind the Tribe keeper to give VCU a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.

The second half was full of back and forth action, William and Mary’s Leah Zamesnik tied the game at 1-1 off a rebounded shot 47 minutes into the game.

The Tribe took a 2-1 lead, at the 56:47 mark, when Mikala  Savaides put the ball into the back of the boards, but VCU wasn’t finished, answering back 10 seconds later when Lyerly scored her second goal of the game to tie the match back up.

The tie did not last though; Tribe’s Zamesnik finished the game with a goal from the top of the circle, at the 58:04 minute of the game.

The Rams are now 8-9 for the season, including 1-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Rams return to the road for their final game of the season next week, when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Northeastern, in their final CAA match on Friday Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.

Rams Face Tribe for Senior Day

Hey Ram Fans!

The VCU Rams are all set to take on the Tribe of William and Mary this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Cary Street Field.

Before the match today the Rams will be honoring its four seniors; Ashley Aston ( Suffolk, Va.), Lindsay Jones (Springfield, Va.), Rachel Krumm (Norfolk, Va.) and Lindsay Shacklette (Fredricksburg, Va.) for their dedication to the Rams over the past four years.

In addition to the Senior Day festivites the the Rams are also joing forces with the Tribe to host “Play for a Cure” in support of cancer research.

Hope to see everyone out there, and get there early because the first 100 fans get free t-shirts!

Rams Fall Against Old Dominion

Another hard loss for the Rams tonight, against the Monarchs of Old Dominion with a final score of 3-0.

Richmond, Va. –   The Virginia Commonwealth University field hockey were overtaken Friday night by the Old Dominion Monarchs, 3-0 at Cary Street Field.

Two early goals by the Monarchs in the first seven minutes of the game, gave ODU the advantage they would need to ultimately win the game.

“When we came out it seemed like we were afraid of them (ODU),” said Rams Head Coach Kelly McQuade, when asked about the game, “that set us on our heels right from the start.”

The Rams were outshot 14-9 during the game, with ODU’s Kathleen Shea gaining two goals and Rachel Stream with one.

VCU’s keeper, Megan Botteri (Mount Bethel, Pa.) played the entire 70 minutes of the match, racking up seven saves for the Rams.

The Rams are now 8-8 for the season, with three games left to play and 1-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

“We have to get it back in their heads that we have to be able to play and really come out hard Sunday; it’s going to be a good emotional game,” said McQuade.

The Rams will return to Cary Street Field on Sunday Oct. 25 to honor the seniors on Senior Night, when they play host to the Tribe of William and Mary at 1 p.m.

The match is being dedicated to Dave Long, as a part of “Play for a Cure” to support cancer research.

VCU Set to Host “Play for a Cure”

The Rams will host the Tribe of William and Mary, Sunday Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. at Cary Street Field.

Along with Sunday hosting the Rams Senior Day events, the match is being dedicated to Dave Long, the father of William & Mary graduate Maggie Long, who is currently battling lung cancer. Maggie is a former teammate and close friend of VCU Head Coach Kelly McQuade and Assistant Coach Shannon Karl. Maggie is currently an assistant field hockey coach at Monmouth University.

There will be t-shirts given to the first 100 fans in attendance and a raffle during halftime, raffle prizes include;  iPod Touch, a NikeID Rams Triax Swift watch, a gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse and a VCU Field Hockey polo shirt.  Raffle tickets will be $5 a piece.

We hope to see you all out there to help raise awareness for the fight against cancer and for David Long and his family.

VCU Set to Host Two CAA Games

Hey Rams Fans!

The Rams have been recovering since Tuesday night in preparation for a big Colonial Athletic Association weekend when VCU plays host to both Old Dominion and William and Mary.

First up is the Monarchs, when ODU will travel to Cary Street Field for a 4 p.m. game on Friday Oct. 23rd.  ODU is currently 6-10 for the season and 2-3 in CAA play.

“We will have to match the high paced attack that ODU is sure to bring.  They are very good at putting pressure on the ball so we will have to be on our game with distributing,” said Head Coach Kelly McQuade.

We hope to see you all out at Cary Street Field at 4 p.m. to watch an exciting game against the Monarchs.

Overtime Prevails Against the Spiders

The overtime curse is still lingering on Cary Street Field, as a 3-2 double overtime loss against Richmond on Tuesday night overtook the Rams.

It was a hard fought battle, and the girls played a great game, but couldn’t hold on.

Richmond, Va. – Another overtime heartbreaker claimed the Virginia Commonwealth field hockey team Tuesday night against the Spiders of Richmond, ending in double overtime 3-2.

The Rams held onto a 2-0 lead until the last 10 minutes of the game when Richmond scored two goals within four minute of one another to take the game into overtime.

“It’s all it takes, is 1o minutes of lost mental focus, for a team to take over,” said Head Coach Kelly McQuade, “it’s heartbreaking.”

VCU first scored in the 13th minute of the game during a penalty corner, when junior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands) put in a hard ball from the left side of the circle into the side of boards, assisted by Hannah Lyerly (Williamsburg, Va.).

Going into the second half the Rams had the 1-0 advantage; Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) took it to 2-0 off of another penalty corner in the 52nd minute of the game.

Richmond didn’t let up though, scoring two goals within the final 10 minutes of regulation time.

The first overtime period went scoreless, and in double overtime a breakaway by Richmond’s Megan Thompson would finish the game after 94 minutes of play.

“We’re going positive and trying to get them ready to play together for Friday,” said McQuade.

The Rams are now 8-7 for the season and will return to play on Friday Oct. 23, when the take on Old Dominion at Cary Street Field at 4 p.m. to resume conference play.

Rams Lead 1-0 at Half

It is halftime here at Cary Street Field and the Rams are now leading 1-0 over the Spiders of Richmond.

The lone goal of the half came during the Rams first penelty corner. Marle van Dessel struck the ball hard from the top left of the circle into the inside of the boards. Assisted by Hannah Lyerly.

Hometown Rivalry

Hey Ram Fans!

Tonight the VCU Rams take on their hometown rival, the Richmond Spiders in non-conference play at Cary Street Field.

The teams will begin warm-ups in about 20 minutes or so, with a 7 p.m. game time.

This is always an intense game for both teams and playing under the lights will only make it better so we hope to see you all out there, cheering on your VCU Rams!
